What is SCRIP?
Scrip means “substitute money”. Scrip is regular debit gift cards and paper gift certificates for specific stores, restaurants, and services that are used just like cash. The scrip is issued by national and local retailers where many families already shop. These merchants want to support non-profit organizations, and in return they ask you to support them by shopping with scrip at their stores. You can use scrip to purchase everyday items like food, clothing, and other essentials, and with every purchase, you earn a rebate which can be used to support the Booster Club and to pay for fees on your family account, all without spending additional money.
How can we raise money with scrip?
We will be working with the Tigard/Tualatin Script Service Center for local retailers and the Great Lakes Scrip Center for national retailers. They both purchase large amounts of scrip at a reduced rate from grocery stores, department stores, and other retailers on behalf of non-profit organizations. The Booster Club will buy the scrip from the Scrip Centers at a discount, and re-sell the certificates to families for full face value. The discount, which varies by retailer from two to fifteen percent or more, is the profit that we will earn from this fundraiser. For example, if a person purchased a $25 certificate for United Artist Regal Cinema, they would pay us $25. We would purchase the certificate at an 8% discount, paying $23 for the certificate. The person would have a gift certificate worth the $25 face value and we will have raised a $2 rebate from this transaction.
How will the rebates be used?
The rebates from this fundraiser can be used in two ways. A portion of the rebate, which may be considered tax deductible, can be designated to support the NHS Booster Club while the rest will be put into the student’s own account. Money in the student’s account can be used towards his or her athletic, academic or activities fees. Any fee that you would write a check to the NHS bookkeeper for, can be paid for with scrip funds.
Participating Retailers
We are offering scrip from two different programs Great Lakes Scrip and Tigard Tualatin Scrip so that we can offer a wide range of both national and local retailers. Contact Valerie Hamilton @valeriedhamilton@Comcast.net to get a current list of participating retailers. The retailers and/or discounts they are offering may change from time to time, however, our order on-line order forms will reflect these changes.
